The Story

The Chicago Mothman, a mysterious winged humanoid with glowing red eyes and a 10-foot wingspan, has intrigued residents and cryptid enthusiasts since its first sighting in 2011. Over 50 reports describe Mothman perched on rooftops or flying through the night sky in the Windy City. I’ve painted him enjoying the Northern Lights. Yup, even in Illinois!

Technique

Painting with acrylics comes with its own set of challenges. In this particular piece, there was a need for extensive black areas. I began by using black acrylic markers for the base and then switched to a brush for the details. While this method accelerated the process, it resulted in a two-tone effect due to variations in the black shades. As a result, some touch-ups were needed towards the end, potentially prolonging the overall time spent on the piece.

The sky effect was a new and exciting experience for me. My inspiration stemmed from the possibility of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights visible across North America this year. Regrettably, I was not among the fortunate few who witnessed them.
