Cryptozoology: How I Painted the Jackalope from Concept to Completion

Part 1: Painting in Progress - The Legendary Jackalope - Cryptid

I start most of my paintings with LOTS of research! Cryptozoology is my current 'rabbit hole' and what better Cryptid to start with than the Jackalope!

Many people refer to cryptids as "monsters", personally I like to think of them as misunderstood animals that need our compassion.

Here is the first sketch of my idea that I will paint on canvas to hang at the Myths & Memories Art Show I'm having with a friend, June/July 2024.

Part 2: Painting in Progress - The Legendary Jackalope - Cryptid

The awkward stage(s)!

Every painting goes through a difficult transition, sometimes several of them. As an experienced artist I always expect it but even then, every time it happens I have those nagging thoughts... is this EVER going to come together?

This painting of a Jackalope from my Cryptozoology series is certainly no exception.

Painted on a 12"x12" canvas.

Part 3: Painting in Progress - The Legendary Jackalope - Cryptid

Beyond the awkward (ugly) stage!

This Jackalope painting from my Cryptozoology series is beginning to come together. Still lots of work, but it's feeling like what I envisioned.

I painted the background flowers first in watercolor. I was having difficulty visualizing the finished flowers with just a rough sketch of the rabbit, so I blocked it in with acrylic pens (I'll paint it with acrylic and a brush later).

It's a little more whimsical than most of my paintings don't you think?

Part 4: DONE! - The Legendary Jackalope - Cryptid

So excited this painting is DONE!

Oh, and I've titled it... "Jackie Jackalope"
