Junction City Roses En Plein Air

The Story

Painted during a local Plein Air Event. This is a spot my plein air group often goes on our weekly excursions. I've drawn the tower several times but this is the first time painting it. I even included the gold around the lettering that's actually on the tower. I often sketch in words or lettering on location, but then finish the in my studio since they can be very tedious.

I featured the beautiful roses planted around this shopping area. That a style I'm starting -- letting nature be the focus with the human elements in the background. I have huge list of subjects and scenes for a series titled "Urban Nature". I think this one fits.

Technique

Watercolor on Canvas! This was about the 5th painting using this technique. I pushed it a little further than the last one. Its a little tedious since the color sits on the surface and if you try to layer another color over the first color, they will blend or completely lift and dissolve. The advantage of painting watercolor on canvas? After I seal it with wax, it's ready to hang even without a frame. But a frame does give it that elegant finishing touch!
